چکیده

Power modulators for pulsed microwave applications, generally utilizing a thyratron-switched PFN, typically produce 50-120 kV, 1-2 kA microsecond timescale pulses with sub-microsecond ( -100-200 nsec) risetimes. This paper will review an investigation into the feasibility of utilizing certain solid-state power switches at the relatively fast speeds required for HPM modulators. Two very different thyristor switches, an ABB HCT and ann-type MCT, were investigated in a fast (-136 nsec), low-impedance 1.4-~sec PFN. Limited success was obtained, as both switches demonstrated sub-microsecond switching times. The ABB HCT switched a bias of 3840V with a risetime of 524 nsec. The N-MCT was faster, switching a bias of 944V in 220 nsec. These results indicate that thyristor switches may be fast enough for some HPM modulator applications.

Voltage Droop Compensation for Marx Modulators*

Marx modulators operated by solid-state switches (e.g. MOSFET, IGBT) offer an alternative to traditional high voltage (HV) modulators for rf power sources. They have the merits of compact size, high-energy efficiency, high reliability, pulse width control and cost reduction. However, Marx modulators need a complex voltage compensation circuit if they are employed in long pulse applications such...

A New Solid State High Power Pulsed Modulator

The CLW modulator represents the first successful application of high-power IGBT switching modules to meeting the requirements of multi-megawatt peak power modulators for microwave amplifier applications. Unlike some other solid-state modulators, no semiconductor switches are placed in series in this system. Neither are the switches connected in parallel. Rather, each switch drives a segment of...

Solid-state Over-current Protection for Industrial DC Distribution Systems

We describe a concept for circuit protection and fault current limitation in DC power systems based on the use of solid-state power switches. The approach could be useful in the increasingly widespread application of DC power distribution networks. During normal operation the power switch is always “on”. During faults, the gate of the solid-state switch is pulse modulated to prevent the circuit...

Advances in Semiconductor Devices and Their Growing Use in Electrical Circuits and Systems

The main aim of this investigation is to assess the suitability of modern power semiconductor devices for pulse power applications. Pulse power system involves the storage of energy, which is released in form of high power pulse to the load by means of a switching device. Hence the basic components of pulse power system are an energy storage element, a switch, and a load circuit. The energy sto...
